Nehuenco Combined-Cycle Power Complex & GNL Quintero LNG Terminal

The 47th IAEE International Conference is pleased to offer an exclusive technical visit to two of Chile’s most important energy infrastructures: the Nehuenco Combined-Cycle Power Complex and the GNL Quintero LNG Terminal.

This full-day technical tour provides a unique opportunity to examine firsthand the infrastructure, technologies, and operational practices that support electricity reliability, fuel security, and system flexibility in one of Latin America’s most dynamic energy markets.

Participants will learn how Chile developed its LNG infrastructure following the regional natural gas supply disruptions of the 2000s and how natural gas continues to play a critical role in supporting renewable energy integration, power system resilience, and energy security. The visit will also provide insights into the operational challenges of modern power generation and fuel supply infrastructure in the context of an accelerating energy transition.

The program combines technical presentations by senior industry professionals with guided visits to key operational facilities, offering a practical perspective on the interaction between fuel supply, power generation, and electricity system operations.

Highlights

Nehuenco Combined-Cycle Power Complex (887 MW)

One of Chile’s most important natural gas-fired power generation facilities.

Participants will learn about:

  • The role of natural gas in Chile’s electricity system
  • Combined-cycle power generation technology
  • Operational flexibility and reliability
  • Integration of renewable energy resources
  • Power system operation and dispatch challenges

GNL Quintero LNG Terminal (334,000 m³ LNG Storage Capacity)

Chile’s first LNG import terminal and a cornerstone of the country's energy security strategy.

Participants will learn about:

  • LNG infrastructure and operations
  • Chile’s energy security strategy
  • LNG supply chains and logistics
  • The role of LNG in electricity generation and industrial energy supply
  • The contribution of LNG to energy transition and system resilience
